Cheat sheet
- Place values (8 bits): 128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1 – the largest value is 255.
- Hex digits: 0–9 then A=10, B=11, C=12, D=13, E=14, F=15. One hex digit = one nibble (4 bits).
- Binary addition: 0+0=0, 0+1=1, 1+1=0 carry 1, 1+1+1=1 carry 1. A carry out of the 8th bit is an overflow.
- Left shift by n multiplies by 2ⁿ. Right shift by n divides by 2ⁿ (bits shifted off the end are lost).
- 8 bits = 1 byte, 4 bits = 1 nibble, 1000 bytes = 1 KB, 1000 KB = 1 MB, 1000 MB = 1 GB, 1000 GB = 1 TB, 1000 TB = 1 PB.
- Image size (bits) = width × height × colour depth.
- Sound size (bits) = sample rate × duration × bit depth.
