How bitmap images work
- A bitmap image is a grid of pixels. Each pixel's colour is stored as a binary number.
- Colour depth is the number of bits per pixel. 1 bit gives 2 colours, 2 bits give 4 colours, n bits give 2βΏ colours.
- Resolution is the number of pixels (width Γ height). More pixels or a bigger colour depth means better quality but a bigger file.
- File size in bits = width Γ height Γ colour depth. Divide by 8 for bytes.
- Metadata (width, height, colour depthβ¦) is stored with the image so it can be displayed correctly.
